Asian Brush Painting Workshop with Jean Kigel

You, too, can learn the ancient art of brush painting - right here on Midcoast Maine! We've put together this special workshop with Jean Kigel, an award-winning member of the Sumi-e Society of America. Jean will teach you the specific handling of Eastern brushes, inks, and water-based colors on highly absorbent papers.  From grinding and mixing ink, holding the brush the Asian way, to loading the brush with multiple tones of ink and color, it's all there. You'll get to learn a variety of brushstrokes, including eight basic calligraphic strokes, the bone stroke and mi dots.  Whether you have previous experience in brush painting and watercolor or not, don't worry - by the end of the workshop you should be able to paint traditional flowers, birds, and fish. Each of the indoor sessions (sorry, rice paper and wind don’t mix) is filled with demonstrations, illustrative slides, and ample guided-painting time and critiques and on the last day you get to visit Jean's studio on Muscongus Bay.

Born and nurtured in rural Warren, Maine, on a two hundred acre farm rich in natural beauty, Jean Kigel paints from a storehouse of childhood images, enriched by her travels to the Far East. Drawn to the whiteness of negative space, the delicacy of balance, and the simplicity of a stroke that suggests an image, she loves the light-hearted ink-play of the brush cavorting on the paper. Jean's work has many followers. She has exhibited widely and her paintings are in numerous collections. Her show in New York this winter sold out.

An award-winning member of the Sumi-e Society of America and the Union of Maine Visual Artists, Jean has traveled and studied in Japan, China, and the US.  Over the past ten years, she has conducted workshops at the University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine in Farmington, the Maine College of Art, the Farnsworth Museum, and the former Round Top Center for the Arts.
