Asian Brush Painting Workshop - Jean's List of Materials

These are the supplies you should bring:

  • Paints: Bring along any combination watercolor paints you may have,
including one tube of Chinese white.

  • Undercloth: A piece of felt or wool, a little larger than your largest paper
is necessary for laying under the thin, absorbent rice paper (a sheet of felt
from a fabric store or a piece of a thin, old wool blanket is ideal.)

  • Water container: at least 1 quart capacity, wide-mouthed is best.

  • White porcelain dishes: at least three white, saucers-like dishes are
required for mixing at least three values of ink.

  • Paper towels/tissues/kitchen sponges: useful for testing values of ink
    and for blotting.

  • Ink stick and grinding stone: optional, but strongly recommended for
producing a range and brilliance of values.

These are the supplies included in the package price:

  • Brushes: One large white (sheep/rabbit soft) and one small brown
(wolf/badger stiff) Asian brush with bamboo handles.

  • Ink: Liquid sumi from Japan.

  • Paper: Asian rice paper is very thin and absorbent compared to Western
watercolor paper, requiring great control when applying strokes.

  • Specialty paper for water sketching: Ideal for outdoor practice. Brush
stokes made with water (instead of ink) evaporate rendering the paper
infinitely re-usable, perhaps symbolizing the ephemeral nature of beauty.
