The Rooms

Le Vatout has four guestrooms. Like our feathered friends after whom we’ve named them, they’re simple and homey, with flashes of decoration that will delight you every time you stay. The beds are good - we've tried them out ourselves - and in the winter we can provide you with flannel sheets and hot water bottles on request. You have a choice of down or hypoallergenic pillows and thick, soft towels are guaranteed year-round. Each room has comfortable chairs and reading lamps and is filled with art and books. There's a small TV in the dining area so you won't have to miss out on sports and the news, and we have pretty zippy wireless internet access throughout the building.

Warm and bright, with three windows, two of which let in the evening sun, the Goldfinch is on the ground floor, with a view of trees and evergreens.

It is the former parlor of the house, has wide-pine floors and elaborate moldings, a walk in closet and an en-suite bathroom with a tub shower. The bed, a beautiful mahogany four-poster family heirloom is a traditional full, but sleeps two people comfortably.

Rates: June 1st through October 31st: $125 (Off-season: $100)

Le Vatout's other guest rooms are on the second floor - perching high up under the eaves:

The Robin is a writer's dream. Cool and cozy, it is the most private of our rooms and its north-side window makes you feel as if you sit among feathery hemlocks. It features a hand-carved desk - another family heirloom - and a comfortable chair with a reading lamp. A large library of "real" books can inspire the writer in anyone and makes the reader feel at home. The Robin has a queen-sized sleigh bed, a large closet and a private bathroom, which is located right next door.

Rates: June 1st through October 31st: $125 (Off-season: $100)

Chickadee RoomNuthatch room The Chickadee and the Nuthatch look down onto our gardens. Charming rooms with old-fashioned built-ins and wide-pine floors they’re quintessential Maine. Both have a southern exposure and sunlight streams in almost all day long. Each has a library of "real" books and two single beds and they share a bathroom with a large, walk-in shower located across the hall.

The Nuthatch is the larger of the two, large enough to let you combine the beds into a king. It also has a beautiful antique arts and crafts desk, especially handy if you want to bring a laptop and use our wireless internet connection.

Rates - Nuthatch: June 1st through October 31st: $110
(Off-season: $95)
Rates - Chickadee: June 1st through October 31st: $95
(Off-season: $85)

The Fine Print

We try our darndest to run Le Vatout as a green inn and are the proud recipient of Maine's Environmental Leader Certificate. We recycle just about everything and use environmentally safe cleaning products, CFL bulbs and bulk dispensers for soap and shampoos. Sheets and towels are re-used and only changed every three days - unless, of course, you need a change sooner - and our laundry features energy efficient front loaders. The house is smoke-free, but you may light up outside unless, of course, another guest objects.

We compost every scrap of organic matter and are a member of MOFGA, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. Our garden and its herbs and produce are organic and pesticide-free. Bread, milk and eggs are locally produced as are almost all other ingredients.
