The Chickadee Room High above the "dooryard", the Chickadee gets an extra helping of fragrance wafting up from the roses growing right below. It is a small, charming room with old-fashioned built-ins and wide-pine floors and our most economical solution. It's quintessential Maine. ... and its relative The Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is the state bird of Maine and our garden teems with their songs. Chickadees' complex vocalizations are thought to be an evolutionary adaptation: since they live and feed in dense vegetation, birds tend to get out of each others' visual range and keep in contact with their calls instead. In sparsely populated rural or forested areas, chickadees are often rather trusting. At Le Vatout, where chickadees are very much at home, they might just land on your hand if you are calm and patient (and offer them some seeds).
