Woodworking Workshop with David Talley

Whether you’ve never laid hands on a plane or whether your dreams are made of marquetry, David can help you grow to the next level. This two (or three) day intensive course on woodworking and furniture making is an unusual, up-close-and-personal opportunity to learn from a dedicated artisan. Tailored to your interests and your experience, it will give you both, a comprehensive overview of all phases of furniture making with a special emphasis on design as well as plenty of hands-on instruction!

David TalleyDavid Talley is a professional furniture maker from Tenants Harbor, Maine. Mostly self taught, he is strongly influenced by James Krenov, the legendary woodworker who inspired a generation of furniture makers with his high regard for materials and craftsmanship and designs informed by organic, subtle details. David’s passion for the functional artistry of furniture making developed originally during a few decades of practicing dentistry and boat-building. In 1998 he embarked upon an intensive self-apprenticeship and has been driven to design and build furniture ever since. David has done numerous commissions and is represented by galleries in Maine, New York and Florida. He also exhibits at the Philadelphia Invitational Furniture Show and The New American Furniture Show, among others. Most importantly, though, he is a patient teacher who loves sharing his passion and helping others discover the joy of woodworking.

To take full advantage of everything David has to offer, your workshop starts before it starts: with a phone conversation to cover your curriculum. Together you will pick from a variety of mini-clinics on subjects such as sharpening, milling, and various joinery techniques and, possibly, plan a simple project for your stay. This is no run-of-the-mill group workshop; the intensely personal nature of Le Vatout’s private instruction packages will ensure that you won't be wasting your time repeating things you've already mastered. For the novice it's an unusual opportunity for a tremendous growth of knowledge. For the more experienced it's a chance to expand and fine-tune. Regardless of your prior exposure to woodworking, we know you'll be enriched and stimulated and, most importantly, you'll have a great deal of fun!

I find the act of building to be a most wonderful, even magical, experience;
each ordinary moment becomes extraordinary.
