The Rooms

Le Vatout has four guestrooms. Like our feathered friends after whom we’ve named them, they’re simple and homey with flashes of decoration that will delight you every time you stay. The beds are good (we've tried them out ourselves) and in the winter we can provide you with flannel sheets and hot water bottles on request. For the summer, for those few nights when the breeze coming from the river does not suffice to cool you down, there are fans. Thick, soft towels are guaranteed year-round. Almost all rooms have desks (with powerstrips for all your electronic gizmos), comfortable chairs and reading lamps and a good old-fashioned luggage rack. Each room is filled with art and books from our personal collection. Not meant for decoration, they clamor to be savored by, well, you! There's a small TV in the dining area so you won't have to miss out on sports and the news should you forget your laptop, and we have pretty zippy wireless internet access throughout the building. Of course, for you, it's free.

That said, here are The Rooms:

Maine RoomWarm and bright, with three windows, two of which let in the evening sun, the Goldfinch is on the ground floor, with a view of trees and evergreens. It is the former parlor of the house, has wide-pine floors and elaborate moldings, a walk in closet and an en-suite bathroom with a tub shower. The bed, a beautiful mahogany four-poster family heirloom is a traditional full, but sleeps two people comfortably.

Maine RoomThe Robin is a writer's dream. Cool and cozy, it is the most private of our rooms and its second-floor, north-side window makes you feel as if you sit among feathery hemlocks. It features a hand-carved desk - another family heirloom - and a comfortable chair with a reading lamp. A large library of "real" books can inspire the writer in anyone and makes the reader feel at home. The Robin has a queen-sized sleigh bed, a large closet and a private, en-suite bathroom.

Maine RoomThe Nuthatch looks down onto our gardens from its second floor perch. A charming room with old-fashioned built-ins and wide-pine floors, it's quintessential Maine. There are two single beds, a beautiful antique arts and crafts desk and a comfortable chair, handy if you want to bring a laptop and use our wireless internet connection, though for entertainment there are always... books! The Nuthatch shares a bathroom with the Chickadee next door.

Maine roomHigh above the "dooryard", the Chickadee gets an extra helping of fragrance wafting up from the roses growing right below. It is a small, charming room with old-fashioned built-ins and wide-pine floors and it's our most economical solution. This room is a favorite of guests who are travelling alone, although its two single beds can accommodate two people just the same. The Chickadee shares a bathroom with the Nuthatch right next door.

The Fine Print

We try our darndest to run Le Vatout as a green inn and are the proud recipient of Maine's Environmental Leader Certificate. In fact, we just got recertified with such a high number of points, we made the top ten list for all of Maine!

We recycle just about everything and use environmentally safe cleaning products, CFL bulbs and bulk dispensers for soap and shampoos. For our guests, we offer filtered tap water and light weight, non-plastic water bottles on loan. Sheets and towels are re-used until turnover (unless, of course, you need a change sooner) and our laundry features energy efficient front loaders.

We compost every scrap of organic matter and are a member of MOFGA, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. Our garden and its herbs and produce are organic. Eggs are free-range and organic, bread and milk are locally produced as are almost all other ingredients.

That said, here are The Rules:

  • All room rates are double occupancy and include a full breakfast.

  • During the season, there is a two-night minimum on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Sorry, no pets. But you may borrow ours.

  • We welcome children over the age of twelve.
